Most firms won't tell you what an AI project costs until you've sat through discovery. Here are the published ranges we found, what Denver-area firms list on Clutch, and our own prices, so you can budget before you talk to anyone.

Market ranges

What you're buyingTypical range
Independent AI consultant, hourly$150 to $350
Boutique firm, hourly$250 to $500
Readiness assessment or small project$5,000 to $25,000
Strategy roadmap$25,000 to $75,000
Advisory retainer$2,000 to $5,000 a month
Fractional AI lead, small and mid-size businesses$3,500 to $8,000 a month

Ranges are from a published consultant rate guide; large consulting firms charge well above them.

What Denver-area firms list

Clutch's Denver AI consulting list mixes very different kinds of firms: managed IT providers, offshore development teams, and large custom software shops with six-figure minimum project sizes. Listed hourly rates and minimums vary by an order of magnitude or more, so filter by minimum project size first. Senior, fixed-price mid-market implementers are a small part of the list.

Where the money goes

  1. Discovery and design. Understanding the workflow, the data and what success looks like. Skipping this is the most expensive mistake.
  2. Data preparation. Cleaning, structuring and connecting the documents or records the AI will use. Often the largest single cost.
  3. Build and integration. The assistant or automation itself, plus connections to your CRM, website, email or back office.
  4. Testing. A written set of real examples the system must handle well before launch, and a check against the baseline.
  5. Model usage. Fees from the model provider based on volume. For most internal tools these are modest compared to the build, but they grow with usage, so estimate them up front.
  6. Change management. Training, documentation and adjusting the process around the tool so people actually use it.
  7. Upkeep. Monitoring answer quality, updating content and adjusting as models change.

A Colorado line item

Colorado replaced its 2024 AI Act with SB 26-189, effective January 1, 2027. If an AI tool materially influences consequential decisions about Colorado residents, such as hiring, lending, housing, insurance or health care, budget for notices, disclosures and record keeping. Most internal productivity tools are not in that category. Ask your counsel.

Questions to ask any provider

  1. What will it cost to run each month after launch, including model usage?
  2. How will we know it worked? What's the baseline?
  3. Who owns the code, prompts and data pipelines?
  4. Do you earn referral fees from the AI vendors you recommend?
  5. What happens if it breaks after launch?
