WordPress, Webflow or Shopify? Choosing a website platform in 2026
A practical comparison for mid-market and multi-location businesses: who each platform suits, what it costs to run, and the mistakes that hurt search.
Most platform debates are really about who will maintain the site after launch. Answer that first and the choice usually becomes obvious.
WordPress
Best for: sites that need lots of plugins, complex content, or a large existing ecosystem of developers. Watch for: plugin sprawl, security updates and hosting quality. A well-run WordPress site on good managed hosting is excellent; a neglected one is a liability.
Webflow
Best for: marketing sites where design control matters and the team wants to edit pages without a developer. Watch for: per-site plan costs, limits on complex functionality, and making sure the people editing it are trained.
Shopify
Best for: anything where selling online is the main job. Watch for: app costs that add up, and content or location pages that feel like an afterthought next to the store.
What matters more than the platform
- Who owns the accounts. Domain, hosting, platform and analytics should all be in your company's name, not an agency's.
- Redirects during a move. Every old URL that earned traffic needs a redirect to its new home, or you lose rankings you spent years building.
- Structured data and clear pages. Search engines and AI assistants read the same signals on any platform. A clean page that answers real questions beats a beautiful one that doesn't.
- DNS and email. A redesign is the moment to fix SPF, DKIM and DMARC so your email stops landing in spam.
- Speed on a phone. Test on a real device, not just a fast laptop.
Questions to ask before you sign
- Who will update the site after launch, and have they used this platform?
- What will it cost per year to run, including hosting, plans and apps?
- Is a redirect map included in the scope?
- Will every account be in our name?
- What happens if we leave the agency?
